How to Clean Duvet Cover

We spend a third of our lives in bed. A clean duvet cover means better sleep and fewer allergens. Here's how to clean yours.

What You'll Need

  • Soap-Man Power Wash Laundry Detergent
  • Cold or warm water
  • Dryer or clothesline

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Remove the duvet insert

Take the comforter or duvet insert out of the cover. Close the cover's buttons, zippers, or ties.

  2. 2

    Turn inside out

Turn the duvet cover inside out to protect the outer fabric and colors during washing.

  3. 3

    Wash on gentle

Wash on gentle cycle with cold or warm water and Power Wash detergent. Don't overload the machine.

  4. 4

    Dry and reassemble

Tumble dry on low or medium heat. Remove promptly to prevent wrinkles. Reinsert the duvet while slightly damp for easier assembly.

Pro Tips

  • TIPWash the duvet cover weekly or biweekly -- it protects your expensive comforter from body oils and dirt.
  • TIPThe burrito roll method makes reinserting the duvet easy: lay the cover inside-out, roll the duvet inside, then unroll while turning right-side-out.
  • TIPClose all closures before washing to prevent the cover from ballooning and tangling.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • XWashing with the closures open, which causes the cover to balloon, tangle, and trap other items inside.
  • XUsing hot water on colored or printed covers, which fades colors and can cause shrinkage.
  • XWashing the duvet cover with the insert still inside, which prevents proper cleaning of either.
