How to Clean Record Player

Your record player need regular cleaning to perform well and last longer. Here's the safe way to do it without damaging sensitive components.

What You'll Need

  • Carbon fiber brush
  • Stylus cleaner
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Isopropyl alcohol (for exterior only)
  • Compressed air

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Clean the records first

Use a carbon fiber brush on each record before and after playing. Brush in the direction of the grooves while the record spins slowly.

  2. 2

    Clean the stylus

Use a stylus cleaning brush or gel. Brush from back to front only (never side to side). This removes dust that degrades sound quality.

  3. 3

    Wipe the platter and surfaces

Remove the platter and wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. Clean the dust cover and base with a slightly damp cloth.

  4. 4

    Check the belt and components

While the platter is off, inspect the drive belt for wear. Blow dust from the tone arm mechanism with compressed air from a distance.

Pro Tips

  • TIPClean the stylus before every play session. A dirty stylus damages records and degrades sound quality progressively.
  • TIPStore records vertically in inner sleeves to minimize dust and prevent warping.
  • TIPA Magic Eraser (melamine foam) gently pressed against the stylus tip is a common audiophile cleaning trick.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • XCleaning the stylus side to side, which can snap the delicate cantilever. Always brush back to front.
  • XUsing household cleaners on the turntable, which can damage the finish and leave residue on the platter.
  • XBlowing dust off with your mouth, which sprays moisture onto sensitive components.
